Idol Thoughts (Top 8)...

Songs from the year they were born, aka songs of the 80s, takes center stage tonight with two very distinct groups of 4 in my mind.  The fearsome foursome of Danny, Adam, Matt, and Kris and the inconsistent foursome of Lil, Noop, Alison, and Scott.   Is it possible we will see another girl go home tonight?  Can you imagine a final 7 with only one girl left?  My gut says that this is Scott's week to go home, but let's let them actually sing before making that call, shall we?

Danny Gokey, "Stand by Me" - Another stand out performance from Mr. Gokey sets the stage for a great night.  The oldest person to sing tonight was born in 1980, sigh... (A-)

Kris Allen, "All She Wants to Do is Dance" - What a lame song.  Seriously, that was a hit song?  Kris did fine, but that was just an awful song. And the worst part about it is that this is the exact week that he had to be on his game to keep his voters motivated.  I fear for my new boy, he could be in trouble. (C+)

Lil Rounds, "What's Love Got to Do With It" - Hmmm.  I think I've decided that Lil just isn't as good as we all thought.  She fooled us with one decent performance in her group of 12 and since then has been nothing but mediocre.  Maybe she's nervous, maybe she just doesn't have the pipes, but she's missing that strength or voice, and she even falters on a lot of the notes.  (C)

Anoop Desai, "True Colors" - If I were Noop I would never sing a fast song again.  He's undefeated when he does the ballads, and unlistenable when he cranks up the tempo.  Even in this song when he tried to notch the beat up in the middle he lost it for a bit.  I repeat, keep it low and slow my friend, it's your only chance. (C+)

Scott MacIntyre, "The Search is Over" - There really is nothing left to say about Scott.  Every week he stays is another week that is unfair to the person who goes home.  He is a decent singer, nothing more, nothing less, and there are, without exaggeration, thousands of people who deserve to be on that stage more than based on talent. (C-)

Allison Iraheta, "I Can't Make you Love Me" -  The good news for Allison is that her recent appearance in the bottom three should keep her safe this week.  The other good news is that she dropped another great performance.  A little boring but still great. (B+)

Matt Giraud, "Part Time Lover" - Stevie Wonder is perfect for Mr. Giraud.   He needs to live in this genre.  When he can let the soul and funk out he shows himself as a force to be reckoned with.  Even thought there were moments in this that were a bit shaky, overall it just feels so right for him. (B)

Adam Lambert, "Madword" - First, I LOVE THIS SONG CHOICE.   I first heard it used to great effect in the film "Donnie Darko" and was immediately in love.  It was more recently used a couple years ago in a powerful add for the video game "Gears of War".  And now Lambert owns it.  This kid is incredible. Overall Rankings

Adam Lambert
Danny Gokey
Kris Allen
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta
Anoop Desai
Lil Rounds
Scott MacIntyre

Who should go home:

Scott MacIntyre

Who will go home:

Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey:  Safe via their sheer awesomeness.

Lil and Allison: Safe via their femaleness (no way a girl goes tonight)

Matt:  Slight Risk via forgettable performance but should be safe by the Bottom 3 bounce.

Noop and Kris:  Major Risk via forgettable performances and supposed safety (especially Kris)

Scott:  Major Risk via being out of his league.

This is a tough one.  I really was thinking Scott would be gone tonight, but I can't tell if it's my heart over ruling my logic because honestly, Kris is in the exact same place that sent Alexis home just a few weeks ago.  Never been in the bottom three, had an amazing week the week previous, so he feels as secure as Danny or Adam but without the rabid fanbase.  Add to this a performance that is neither great nor awful and you have a recipe for nobody feeling the need to pick up the phone for Mr. Allen.   I hope I'm wrong but my official prediction is that Kris says goodbye, while Scott and Noop live another day.
